1st International BaltCICA Conference

”Climate changes – from recognition to adaptation”

The 1st International BaltCICA Conference “Climate changes – from recognition to adaptation” was held in Kalundborg, Denmark, the 26th and 27th of January 2010. It gathered more than seventy persons. Half of them were project partners, and the other half was mainly made up of local and regional administration representatives and scientists. Let us also note the presence of Pan Baltic organization representatives and of interested public.

Mr. Johannes Klein, the BaltCICA project coordinator and Mr. Martin Damm, the Mayor of Kalundborg opened the conference by welcoming the audience and the speakers. The latter started in focusing on the Municipality of Kalundborg in the context of climate change adaptation.

After this short introduction, five renowned speakers faced the audience during the morning session. From Mrs. Katherine Richardson (University of Copenhagen and Chairman for the Danish Government’s Climate Commission) to Mr. Juergen P. Kropp (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, PIK), through Mr. André Jol (European Environment Agency, EEA) and Mr. Povl Frich (Danish Information Centre on Adaptation to Climate Change from the Danish Energy Agency) and Mr. Philipp Schmidt-Thomé (Geological Survey of Finland, GTK), each speaker developed its opinion and ideas on climate change adaptation, providing us with very interesting points of view concerning their own expertise. This first part of the conference was concluded with a panel debate, chaired by Mr. Philipp Schmidt-Thomé from GTK. Throughout the presentations and the debate, the audience had the possibility to interact with the speakers, providing a lively debate.

The afternoon was divided into two parallel sessions. One session regarded science supporting adaptation, chaired by Mrs. Elena Talockaite from the Environmental Centre for Administration and Technology Lithuania (ECAT). The other session was chaired by Mr. Jörg Knieling from the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) and focused on the process oriented spatial planning. Each session consisted of four presentations which offered the opportunity to some project partners to explain the work they realized for the case studies or to present some ideas, or even to mention other projects which could be related to some extent to BaltCICA. Here also, the audience had the possibility to interact with the presenting person. Finally, the conference was closed with conclusions of the afternoon made by Mr. Johannes Klein.

We would like to thank the Municipality of Kalundborg which played a key role in the organization of the event.

The 2nd International BaltCICA Conference is going to take place in May 2011 in Bergen, Norway.
